RB Warehouse's ShieldWrap Plus™, with its foil/white, 95% reflective, perforated house wrap material, is recognized for its variety of applications but is most often used as House Wrap. Its reputation is built on its exceptional efficacy as a moisture and vapor barrier, and as an insulated house wrap. ShieldWrap Plus™ by RB Warehouse is comprised of a highly-reflective metalized film that repels radiant heat rather than absorbing it. Employing ShieldWrap Plus™ on your sidewalls can amplify the productivity of standard insulation by up to 50%, as verified by third-party laboratory studies.
Rising R-Value code prerequisites in sidewalls have recently been instituted by several states and municipalities. This trend poses challenges as many sidewalls are only 4” in thickness. ShieldWrap Plus™, however, is widely acknowledged as a Radiant Barrier that can enhance R-Values in sidewalls when used following specific installation techniques.
METHODS FOR INCREASING R-VALUES IN WALL ASSEMBLIES:
Method 1: Inside Wall Application: Begin by installing R-12 Fiberglass batting in your wall cavity. Subsequently, encase the inside wall 4” studs with ShieldWrap Plus™, silver side facing the insulation, covering the insulation and leaving a 1” dead airspace. Finally, mount your Drywall Board directly onto the studs as you would typically do. This installation strategy results in an R-Value of R-17, not counting the R-Values of the drywall or the Exterior Wall (such as brick or siding), which could potentially contribute an additional R-2 or more to the application.
Method 2: Outside Wall Application: It's as simple as wrapping ShieldWrap Plus™, silver side out, to the outside wall, attaching it to the OSB as you would a conventional house wrap. If the external wall is made of brick, this will result in an extra 1” or 2” of airspace between the OSB and the bricks. If the external wall is plank siding that is typically installed directly on the OSB, you'll need to add 1” spacers or furring strips between the OSB and the plank siding to create an additional airspace. This extra 1” of airspace can boost the R-Value by R-5. Continue the process by installing R-13 Fiberglass Batting as usual. This installation method offers a 95% reflectivity and an R-18 without considering the R-Values of the other building materials in the wall assembly. The drywall, the OSB, and the bricks all provide their unique R-Values, possibly adding an additional R-Value of 2 or 3 (your distributor can provide the associated R-Values).
